Nokia BL-5C battery replacement
Press release from Nokia:
Dear Nokia Customer,
This is a product advisory for the Nokia-branded BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. This product advisory does not apply to any other Nokia battery.
Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the affected batteries could potentially experience over heating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. Nokia is working closely with relevant local authorities to investigate this situation.
Nokia has several suppliers for BL-5C batteries that have collectively produced more than 300 million BL-5C batteries. This advisory applies only to the 46 million batteries manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006. There have been approximately 100 incidents of over heating reported globally. No serious injuries or property damage have been reported.
Consumers with a BL-5C battery subject to this advisory should note that all of the approximately 100 incidents have occurred while charging the battery. According to Nokia's knowledge this issue does not affect any other use of the mobile device. Concerned consumers may want to monitor a mobile device while charging that contains a BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.
While the occurence in the BL-5C batteries produced by Matsushita in the time-period specified is very rare, for consumers wishing to do so, Nokia and Matsushita offer to replace for free any BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.

There have been a few cases of minor injuries and minor damage, however the majority of the approximately 100 incidents have not caused any injuries or damage.
My battery (not the BL-5C) feels hot after charging. Is it ok to use it?
Sometimes the batteries in electronic devices can feel hot and that is normal.
My battery is a BL-5C, but not subject to product advisory. How do I know for sure that it is safe?
This product advisory is limited to BL-5C batteries from a single manufacturer during a limited time period. Production of these batteries ended in November 2006.
Nokia?s batteries are tested against known, internationally recognized quality standards and Nokia?s own stringent quality requirements. Nokia also invests a substantial amount in research and development to constantly safeguard and improve the quality and safety of its products. Each of Nokia's batteries complies with all known international quality standards.
What do I do in the meantime if I do not feel comfortable to use my phone? Can Nokia loan me a phone till the replacement battery arrives?
After you have checked your battery identification number, you can determine if your battery is subject to product advisory. If it is not, you don?t have to take any actions and can continue using your phone.
Unfortunately we cannot provide loan phones; this product advisory is limited to a certain lot of BL-5C batteries. We understand your concern, but based on our current understanding, let us assure that the possibility of an incident with your battery is very rare.
Will I be compensated for costs involved in getting the replacement?
This product advisory is free of charge to the consumers, so the replacement battery and the return of the old battery will be paid for.
Is it safe to charge my phone? Is it safe to continue to use my phone?
Nokia and Matsushita believe that the possibility of an incident with your battery is very rare and limited to a specific lot of batteries.
How can you be sure that something like this does not happen to any other batteries that Nokia uses in its products?
All original Nokia batteries adhere to very strict requirements regarding the materials and insulation used. This includes continuous production control and ongoing, intensive product testing. Moreover, Nokia batteries contain built-in safety features, including thermal fuse safety devices, safe cell construction (to prevent internal short cuts), and cell safety vents, among other measures. Due to their construction and the materials used, Nokia lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries have a separate built-in safety circuit.
