Finally, the new 20.0.016 firmware for the N95 8GB has been released on NSU. I updated yesterday and it is definitely worth the upgrade. I had many problems using the phone as a mass storage device and after the upgrade…no more problems, so I am happy. The screen rotation works well when it works but there are times when it just doesn’t work. Also, the phone seems to be a bit more responsive. All N95 8GB owners should update to this firmware.

Get recording for Pangea Day

We’ve mentioned it before, but word of Nokia’s involvement with Pangea Day is spreading far and wide across the web.

Vaibhav Sharma over at The Symbian Blog is the latest to cover the initiative that is seeking mobile film makers to record what inspires them and upload them to Share on Ovi. Vaibhav mentions what is involved, as well as bringing news of the parallel competition running on David Howell’s site, David Howell Studios.

If you want to join the fun, jump over to The Symbian Blog or David Howell Studios for full details of how you can get involved.

Nokia N95 Automatic Screen Rotation

Nokia N95 Automatic Screen Rotation

Nokia’s N95 8GB has just received a new firmware update, hitting v20.0.016 this time round while offering a few bug fixes as well as optimizations. Some of the main changes include the inclusion of Automatic Screen Rotation thanks to the built-in accelerometer as well as support for more Bluetooth headsets. The built-in browser and WiFi connectivity also received some bug fixes, so in theory it shouldn’t crash that often any more. I must say Automatic Screen Rotation is a small touch, but a nice one to have after experiencing it on my Canon PowerShot 720iS.

02 And Car Warehouse Cuts Price Of iPhone

Prices are falling on iPhones sold in the UK.

Retailers 02 and Carphone Warehouse recently announced they are dropping the retail price of Apple’s 8GB Smartphone.

O2 dropped the iPhone price by 100 GBP, (about $197) to 169 GBP, or $333. In Germany, T-Mobile dropped prices earlier this month by about 75% to as little as 99 euros, or about $158, with the most expensive service plan.

These lower prices are expected to remain in place until around June 1, 2008. Apple was not behind this decision to lower the prices of 8GB iPhones. Apple is expected to release a new 3G phone about this same time. Current iPhones operate on the EDGE network.

E65 owner about to jump ship

Lovetocamp5 (known to her mother as Linda) has posted on Howard Forums about falling out of love with her E65.

She??™s threatening to elope with an N95 because she is disappointed in the speaker volume her current device is giving, saying it is ???ridiculously quiet??™. She also doesn??™t think that the ???voice quality and call signal reception??™ is what she has come to expect from Nokia. There is a raft of E65 supporters who have spoken up in favour of the maligned device saying they have had no problems with their devices. Linda isn??™t convinced, though, and is headed towards N95-ville.

Want to jump to the defence of the E65? Jump over quick and let Linda know what you think before she heads to the store.

Blacklisting those nuisance calls

Amir at Mobile Space wonders which is the best app for blacklisting numbers. Ever keen to jump on a passing bandwagon, we thought we??™d have a gander and see what was being said.

Handy Blacklist from Epocware, and Best Blacklist by Smartphoneware get put through their paces by Amir, and it seems there are a number of similarities. Both use the black and white (or black and allow) list system for numbers you want to accept or reject, and both remain in the memory so you can??™t see them running. Amir gives us his verdict, but invites comments from users who prefer one or the other.

So why not jump over and let him know what you think?

Dotsisx over at Symbian Guru has also picked up on this, so have a look at what she has to say too.

Man Arrested For Mobile Phone Voyeurism

With the dawn of multimedia mobile phones snapping pictures has become second nature.

But like anything else, some pictures are appropriate whilst others are not. That’s what Ginmar Antonio Velasquez learned after he was arrested for taking “upskirt” photos of women shopping at a Florida Wal-Mart.

According to police, 34 year old Velasquez was taken in to custody after reaching up a woman’s skirt and taking images of her thighs.

Police seized his Nokia mobile phone and he’s being held on $500.00 bail.

Nokia 5800 ???Tube???

The Nokia 5800 Tube is being positioned by Nokia as an “iPhone Killer.” The runaway success of Apple in the phone business has made Nokia envious, and they think they have an antidote to the runaway Apple winning streak. The Nokia 5800 Tube has several iPhone-like features, such as a Symbian Operating System, code named S60.

Nokia hasn’t been totally upfront about the new features, but some comments they’ve made indicate that a tilt screen is going to be included at 3.2 inches. You can also expect a camera as well as integrated mobile browsing capability. Expect a number of applications because the phone should run both Java and Flash.

nokia 5800 tube

So far the announcement of the 5800 Nokia “Tube” has been met with enthusiasm. Apple has been enjoying their success, but Nokia is a company that is known to come from behind and wear down their opponents with steady performance.

Would you buy a Nokia 5800 Tube?
