Multimedia is a massive selling point in modern mobile phones. Music, video, photos… it all goes towards a mobile phone being seen as the best of the best. Let’s take a look at the shootout between two multimedia giants: the Nokia N96 and the Sony Ericsson G900.

Nokia N96 - the N95 gets ’sleekified’

Nokia, with their Nseries mobile phones, have built themselves a reputation for delivering the goods. When you want a real powerhouse multimedia experience, a Nokia Nseries mobile phone will deliver. The new, upcoming flagship for this superlative range of multimedia mobile phones is the frighteningly sexy Nokia N96, and crikey, is it nice! Let’s start with the looks, because Nokia have dropped the hard edges and sharp angles from the N95, and given the N96 flowing curves, rounded corners, and glossy panels. Or, in other words, they’ve made it look almost identical to an N81. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the N81 was pretty nice, but it would’ve been nice to see such a high-power handset have a design that hasn’t been recycled from older mobile phones. Ah well.

Features-wise, though, there’s no messing about, this is Nokia’s most powerful mobile phone to date, packing in 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA, 16Gb of memory, GPS and masses upon masses of multimedia options, including some really sweet touches, like the little kickstand that Nokia have included on the back of the mobile phone, that lets it stand on its own while you watch it like a TV. I’ve not seen that on any other mobile phones, and it’s a really nice little touch by Nokia. All in all, the Nokia N96 is one heck of a powerful mobile phone.

Sony Ericsson G900 - smartphone for the masses

But is the new Sony Ericsson G900 going to steal the Nokia N96’s thunder? Is it, in fact, a better mobile phone?

Well, to be honest, this fight is one that’s going to go down to the judges. It really is genuinely, properly hard to decide which of these two juggernauts is best. The Nokia N96 is packed to the gills with feature, after feature, after feature, but the Sony Ericsson G900 matches it feature for feature (with the exception of the sheer size of the Nokia’s built-in memory), but it trumps it by having a touchscreen, and whilst that may seem superfluous, it’s something that I’ve always said mobile phones benefit from, and that’s certainly the case here, as it has cool little things like letting you stick virtual post-it notes on the Sony Ericsson’s screen. As I said, though, this is one fight that’s really hard to call, because both these mobile phones are so evenly matched. Basically, I reckon that if you like Nokia, you’ll prefer the N96. But if you like Sony Ericsson, you’ll favour the G900. Possibly not the most helpful conclusion, but at least it’s accurate!
