Nokia News

With the unveiling of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Tube Smart Phone which is being billed as the iPhone killer, it is time to assess whether the Nokia new kid on the block can stand up to its billing or not and whether the iPhone’s days of glory are over. Let’s compare the two mobile giants and see how each of them fares.

Method of input

This Nokia comes equipped with a finger touch, stylus pen or a plectrum alternative that allows you to enter text on the touch screen. Iphone supports finger touch only.

Camera

The iPhone with a lame 2 MP camera sans flash is a clear cut loser in this category for Nokia 5800 comes equipped with an auto focus 3.2 MP built in dual flash camera with Carl Zeiss lens that will allow you to click decent pictures. It also allows superior quality VGA video recording. Thus iPhone is outperformed in every quarter in this round and is not at all recommended for serious shutterbugs.

Video recording

The iPhone allows neither video recording nor video calls. In case of Nokia, these features are standard applications.

Music

Both the Apple and the Nokia will score the same points in the music department and both are dream gadgets for music junkies. However Nokia’s Comes With Music feature, FM radio and super powerful stereo surround speakers might give it an added edge.

Display

This is where Nokia falls short a little when you pit the 3.2 inch display with the iPhone’s 3.5 inch one. But to compensate for this lack, Nokia’s resolution is 5 times better than that of the iPhone’s.

Battery

While iPhone boasts of a talk time of five to ten hours, audio playback of 24 hours and a standby time of 300 hours, the new Nokia is supposed to command a standby time of a staggering 16.7 days or 400 hours and audio playback of 36 hours, which are way ahead of the iPhone’s middling battery performance. The bottom line is that Nokia 5800 has a more powerful battery that gives it an edge over its highly hyped rival.

Cost factor

Being pegged at 220 pounds or 279 euros, the Nokia 5800 deals a severe blow to the future prospects of Apple’s costly product which is perched at a rate so steep that it is out of bounds for most. When customers will compare both the handsets and find that Nokia offers most of the sexy features of the iPhone at a price that is significantly less, they will obviously opt for Nokia for the latter also comes with the peace of mind factor and years of good will.

Verdict

After comparing all the features and the price, gadget gurus are of the opinion that the new Nokia 5800 will give the Apple iPhone a very tough competition for it and is a knock out winner in almost 99% of the categories. At the worst, it will be the same as the iPhone, but cheaper by half. That makes it a must buy for gizmo freaks.

Gaurav Sharma, a renowned tech blogger presents his deep insights on the latest Nokia 5800 Smart Phone. He even presents a 20 point comparison of Iphone and Nokia 5800 in his blog.

Nokia 6300 ??“ Cool to Go

If you’re one of those people that’s looking for highly functional cool, then the Nokia 6300 would be a good phone to look at. This black and silver camera phone is easy on the eye and offers strong camera, internet and multi-media features.

For starters, the 2 megapixel camera has an 8x digital zoom - and most happily for someone like myself who is almost constantly needing a stronger pair of eyeglasses - a full screen viewfinder. The 2 inch screen displays at a 240 x 320 resolution in 16 million colours. The 2 megapixel resolution might seem a bit low to some people, but part of the beauty of this phone is the intention behind it - a beautiful form following simplicity as its function. The camera does not include an LED photo light nor does it include flash.

There is lamentably only a little over seven megabytes of storage space, but the phone includes a microSD slot that will allow you to upgrade to as much as 2 gigabytes of storage - a must have for the multimedia users. Happily, Nokia even includes a 128 megabyte microSD card with the purchase of the phone. The music player uses primarily mp3 format for music, with a couple of miscellaneous formats supported. There is of course an FM music player with a Visual Radio function. There’s even streaming video support included.

Some users will find the battery usage a bit limiting with only 3.5 hours of talk time with a little over 14 days of standby usage. Again, we come back to the tradeoff, though, that striving for simplicity demands. The phone does weigh in at 91 grams, and would surely have to weigh more to accommodate longer usage.

The design of this camera phone itself is a black and stainless steel type finish. On the plus side there is actual alpha numeric keypad with 12 relatively large, easy to use buttons.

As far as Internet access goes, the browser supports XHTML for multi-media browsing. Streaming video moves at 3GPP. Data transfer is moved by EDGE, one of the most efficient protocols in use for mobile phones. The phone also supports Bluetooth and USB, both for peripheral usage and for managing data. The phone includes support for some of the must have uses, such as the short messaging service (SMS), multi-media messaging service (MMS), WAP and e-mail. Infrared support is not included.

The phone does include the Nokia suite for PIM (Personal Information Management) and a CD-ROM for PC and laptop integration. The suite includes Contact management, a calendar, a To-do list, notes, and even an alarm clock and a countdown timer.

Voice recognition technology continues to move forward and you can use voice commands with the phone, including dialing and recording.

The simplicity of this phone makes it an excellent choice for a first phone, a less expensive solution, or for someone intimidated by technology. Power users may find that the functionality isn’t what they used to, and could be disappointed with this phone. Overall, though, we can certainly recommend it as a phone that does the job its designed to do; just make sure you understand its limitations.

Nokia - the History

Nokia is known today as the largest manufacturer of mobile phones, having about 40 percent of the world market share in the second quarter of 2008. This company is even the reason why Finland is a prosperous country in which it is accounted for about 30 percent of the nation’s market capitalization. But Nokia had a really humble beginning-it all started in 1865.

Nokia’s Humble Beginning

In 1895, Fredrik Idestam established a wood-pulp mill, which is now known as the Nokia Corporation. It was first based in the south western Finland town called Tampere but was later relocated to Nokia town so that the company can use the Nokianvirta river. This river is believed to have better hydropower production. The river is where the company’s name, Nokia, originated.

Meanwhile, at the beginning of the 20th century, Finnish Rubber Works began establishing its factories. This company acquired the Nokia Wood Mills and also acquired a company producing telegraph and telephone cables, the Finish Cable Works. The merging of these three companies in 1967 led to the creation of the Nokia Corporation.

The new company tried producing many products like papers, bicycle, car tires, personal computers, footwear, communication cables, electricity generation machineries, televisions, aluminium, capacitors, and a lot more.

Shift to Mobile Communication Tools

Nokia started producing military as well as commercial mobile radio communications technology in the 1960s. It was in 1964 when the company started to create VHF-radio with Salora Oy. The two companies started to develop mobile phones for the NMT network standard. In 1982, they introduced their first car phone called the Mobira Senator, which weighted 9.8 kg.

In 1984, the merging with Salora Oy made the company to create its telecommunication branch named Nokia-Mobira Oy. In the same year, the company also launched the Mobira Talkman, the world’s first transportable phone.

Nokia introduced one of the world’s first handheld phones in 1987 and this was called Mobira Cityman 900. During those days, the Cityman is one of the most light-weight phones having only about 800 g. But its tag price is approximately 4,500 Euros. Although that was very expensive, Cityman was still considered a success.

The GSM Involvement

In 1988, Nokia Mobile Phone emerged from the Nokia Mobira Oy. After three years, the first Global Systems for Mobile Communications or GSM phone was introduced.

In 1992, the company decided to focus more on the telecommunications business. In the same year, Nokia launched its first GSM handset, which is the Nokia 1011. It was in 1994 that the Nokia tune was launched. It was the Nokia 2100 that featured this famous classic phone tune.

The success of Nokia continued until the world’s first satellite call was made in 1994 using a Nokia mobile phone. And in 1997, Nokia introduced a classic game highly associated with the company-Snake.

Finally, in 1998, Nokia mobile phones became the world’s leader. After a year, the company moved to further innovation with its launching of the first WAP handset in the world, the Nokia 7110.

Recent Success of Nokia

Nokia mobile phones continue to be one of the best and most innovative in the world. This was proven in 2002 with the company’s launching of Nokia 6650, its first 3G phone. The company even had its billion sales when it was able to sell billion units of Nokia 1100.

Nokia Corporation is also recognized in the world today as the fifth most valued brand.

From 1865 until today, Nokia continues to create mark on the mobile phone industry. Innovation is always at the top of this company and its history proved its fearless business moves that led it to its massive success.

In another comparison of mobile phones let’s look at the Sony Ericsson K770i and the Nokia 7900 Prism. The K770i which is nicknamed the Cybershot due to the advance nature of the camera that is on it. The camera is a lovely 3.2 megapixel and is very easy to use. The Nokia 7900 Prism has what pretty much seems to be the standard of mobile phone camera’s nowadays with the 2.0 megapixel.

But this isn’t where the comparison will end, each of these phones have some outstanding features that need to be stated. The screen on the Nokia is what’s called an organic LCD screen, which is pretty much the first of its kind, and is also a great selection because it uses so much less energy!

The Nokia 7900 Prism is a beautiful phone and a lot of people will get it mainly for the fact that it looks cool as everything! Prices for this phone will run you somewhat high but if you want it you should have it.

The Sony Ericsson is a great deal too, not many phones will have that great of a camera built into them. But really what will this mobile phone cost you? It will run you less which is a great too.

What you need to decide or look at before buying a mobile phone is for those companies that may be running a mobile phone deal for signing up with them. In fact the Nokia 7900 Prism is one of these phone’s that you pay a 20 pound line charge and the phone is absolutely free to you. What a great savings and a great deal, you’d really have to not like the prism to by pass this deal!

Between these two both phones are great phones just like all the other comparisons, but it’s up to you as the consumer if you want the K770i or the 7900 Prism. Both phones are unbelievably awesome and either mobile phone would be a great new phone for you to have. Both should last you a long amount of time unless you have a tendency to throw your phones, and then you shouldn’t even consider these as an option, but instead get a cheap phone that you won’t care if you break.

Looking at mobile phones is a fun time, looking at the updates that have happened just from last year is a great witness to technological advancements and how much they have come along! If you want a top of the line camera on your mobile phone you should settle for the Sony Ericsson K770i. However if you want the coolest looking of the two mobile phone’s here you should probably pick the Nokia 7900 Prism.

Whichever mobile phone you go with you will get one of the top of the line phones that are available out there. So sit down and look at the specs even picture yourself with each phone and decide which you want to get for your new phone!
