My Digital Generation

I have set up a web page for the My Digital Generation eBook which is now available? ( a very poor web page which I will update soon:)) I have also decided to charge $1.50 for the book with all profits after PayPal charges going to Save The Children- even if I only get to send them $100 it is some reward for the time involved. This book is quite short, only about 160 eBook pages, but a second book is already being written as an add-on to this one. If you purchase this one you will get the second one delivered to you in your preferred format free of charge.

???When I was very young we used to have an outside toilet and I remember being scared that a big spider or rat would come and visit while I was taking care of business yet at no time did I think it odd that the toilet was in the garden. My brother and I used to have our baths in the kitchen sink and again it all seemed perfectly normal. We used to play in the street because there were hardly any cars and when the man who lived a few doors down picked up the local children to let them sit in the back of his open bed truck while he drove down the hill no one shouted ???paedophile!??? at him. It was a glorious experience sitting in the back of the truck feeling the wind rush throw my horribly styled hair at a maximum speed of ten miles an hour??¦???

?????¦I remember snow very vividly and being able to build a Dad sized snowman and then roll his head down the hill just before the global warming melted him- in those days global warming was called the Sun. I have not seen ???proper??™ snow for many years and my children (3 and 6 years old) have never experienced not being able to walk properly because the snow is up to their knees.???

UPDATE: If you are purchasing ‘please’ state your preffered format in the message field. So far 3 out of 4 have no format quoted and it’s taking me forever sending them out. Also, if Didier could contact me- my emails keep getting bounced back!

Odd installations

I just noticed something strange since installing a Psion Revo to my PC. When double clicking SIS files to install to the Nokia E61 my PC trys to install it to the Revo- surely this should be the other way around?

Get Video on E61 (pretty) FAST

I’ve written about Video converters/players for our E61s? once andtwice a while back, if you remember. Well, someone commented (a big Thank you from me) that they use MAKAYAMA Media Studio for Nokia, and I checked the website out. I thought that “Hey, this looks nice”, downloaded a demo… and forgot about it. Well, now I found some time for it so I took it for a spin. I was well amazed. I tried it with a DVD, it converted it onto my E61 (thru USB cable) in about? 7 minutes!!!

MAKAYAMA Media Studio for Nokia

I’m think that it’s totally worth the $30 that it costs… It’s? pretty simple, pretty Fast. Ok click here if you are ready to test it out yourself.

PS: You don’t need to install anything onto your E61, it plays in RealPlayer on the E61

PPS: Nothing is perfect.? For some reason the computer? doesn’t assign a? drive? for? my phone (with PC? Suite v6.82) so? this program puts my videos onto my F:/? Drive; when I noticed this it was simple to fix the problem: when you open the program, in the toolbar,? click on Nokia>Phone is Drive> and select your phone’s drive name (find this in My Computer)

Update: It’s actually not that easy, I think it’s easier with S60v2 or older PC Suite because it hasn’t been optimized for the new one… I have to transfer each file onto my phone using PC Suite manually because they go to a specified drive, but never? straight to the phone :-(

Ooh! E62i!

engadget mobile has a potential huge scoop- the Nokia E62i!

Sure, Nokia knows how to make solid phone, and we hear they even manage move a few units, but if there’s one thing Nokia hasn’t quite nailed yet — for whatever reason — is that thin is in. Well, it doesn’t look like they’re planning on winning any prizes in this arena just yet (though that N75 is dang close), but some blurry camphone shots of a supposed “E62i” successor to the E61/62 qwerty handhelds points to a marked slimming of the phone, and every mm counts in a world of smartphones like the Excalibur, Q and Pearl. From the pics, it’s apparent Nokia has also added a couple of face buttons, swapped the 5-way joystiq for a welcome new flat button, and added a camera. It’s hard to tell from the pics if any other dimensions have gone under the knife in the interest of making this thing a bit more pocketable, but we definitely like where this one is headed. We’re otherwise in the dark for specs, but supposedly “confirmation” is headed our way near the end of November…

Change your reading fonts

One thing that has aways bugged me about the MobiPocket reader on the E61 is the default font. Just discovered that you can change it. Here’s how-

  1. Insert your SD card into an SD card reader and create a new folder called ‘Fonts’ in the Resource folder.
  2. Copy some fonts from Windows/Fonts on your PC to this new folder.
  3. Re-insert your SD card into the E61 and turn it off and back on.
  4. In MobiPocket go to settings/fonts and then choose one of your new fonts from the list. Works really well and brings it close to eReader quality.

If you know of other applications you can change the font in let us all know…

BitTorrent, Gnutella and our E61s

I recently downloaded LimeWire and I’ve started to use to it’s fullest. Downloading all kinds of goodies while the computer is on is pretty nice. I’m sure most of you have (had) experience with these types of things: there have been many in the past like Kazaa which never really attracted me because of all the viruses you could catch. Now life’s different; with virus protection and/or not downloading any exe files you will be fine!

Well, now since there is Symella (LimeWire uses Gnutella protocol) I’m thinking of how to move my experience from behind my desk into my pocket. Wouldn’t it be awesome to be taking a walk while your content is loading instead of sitting behind your desk (not that you have to guard it)?!! You can do that now if you have a Unlimited data plan or your neighborhood has WiFi to share with you!

Here? are the links for SymTorrent, your BitTorrent on E61, and Symella, LimeWire or other Gnutella on E61. Enjoy P2P on the go with S60!Ps: I am still trying to figure out how to use these… so if you know go ahead post in the comments (the problem for me is the peers and torrents, where do you get them?).

Pauses in telephone numbers on the E61?

I have just been asked a question and wondered if any of you knew if the folowing is possible. For people who need to dial into conference calls and through other work telephone systems a passcode is often required. It can be done on other phones, read on…

“With my old K700i I used to be able to save a number in contacts, complete with the passcode (e.g. 0870 24x 2xxx pin 3xxxx3#) so that when I select the number I didn??™t have to input anything else on the keypad. The K700i would input a pause for ???tone dialling??? by pressing and holding the number 7 but that doesn??™t work for Nokia??™s.

I just wondered if the same is possible on the E61?”

Nokia E61: so close to perfection, so disappointing in its shortcomings is an excellent article by Patrick- well worth a read whether you agree or not.

“It’s been 6 months since I purchased my E61, and although it’s a marvelous piece of hardware, I’ve tried to objectively enumerates the pros and cons of this smartphone in particular, and Symbian S60 OS in general.

After many years spent using various PalmOS devices, switching to another OS was a tough decision to take, but the PalmOS hardware was becoming increasingly technically outclassed (i.e. dull and boring) when compared to the competiton. I had been using WiFi at home for a while, and despite the relative rarity of free WiFi hotspots in Europe or France, I couldn’t picture myself using a non-WiFi enabled device, so I sold my Treo 600, and a couple of devices and almost two years later, here I am with my E61, happy to use WiFi yet overall frustrated by this Symbian experience…” The full article is here.
