Nokia BL-5C battery replacement

Press release from Nokia:

Dear Nokia Customer,

This is a product advisory for the Nokia-branded BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. This product advisory does not apply to any other Nokia battery.

Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the affected batteries could potentially experience over heating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. Nokia is working closely with relevant local authorities to investigate this situation.

Nokia has several suppliers for BL-5C batteries that have collectively produced more than 300 million BL-5C batteries. This advisory applies only to the 46 million batteries manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006. There have been approximately 100 incidents of over heating reported globally. No serious injuries or property damage have been reported.

Consumers with a BL-5C battery subject to this advisory should note that all of the approximately 100 incidents have occurred while charging the battery. According to Nokia's knowledge this issue does not affect any other use of the mobile device. Concerned consumers may want to monitor a mobile device while charging that contains a BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.

While the occurence in the BL-5C batteries produced by Matsushita in the time-period specified is very rare, for consumers wishing to do so, Nokia and Matsushita offer to replace for free any BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.

The BL-5C batteries which are subject to the product advisory were used with the following Nokia models or separately as accessories:

Nokia 1100, Nokia 1100c, Nokia 1101, Nokia 1108, Nokia 1110, Nokia 1112, Nokia 1255, Nokia 1315, Nokia 1600, Nokia 2112, Nokia 2118, Nokia 2255, Nokia 2272, Nokia 2275, Nokia 2300, Nokia 2300c, Nokia 2310, Nokia 2355, Nokia 2600, Nokia 2610, Nokia 2610b, Nokia 2626, Nokia 3100, Nokia 3105, Nokia 3120, Nokia 3125, Nokia 6030, Nokia 6085, Nokia 6086, Nokia 6108, Nokia 6175i, Nokia 6178i, Nokia 6230, Nokia 6230i, Nokia 6270, Nokia 6600, Nokia 6620, Nokia 6630, Nokia 6631, Nokia 6670, Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681, Nokia 6682, Nokia 6820, Nokia 6822, Nokia 7610, Nokia N70, Nokia N71, Nokia N72, Nokia N91, Nokia E50, Nokia E60

This product advisory applies also to the following accessories:

Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W, Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-3W

FAQ

What do I need to do if my battery is subject to the advisory?

If you wish, Nokia will send you a replacement battery by courier free of charge. You will also receive instructions on how to return your current battery free of charge.

Have there been reports of minor injuries?

There have been a few cases of minor injuries and minor damage, however the majority of the approximately 100 incidents have not caused any injuries or damage.

My battery (not the BL-5C) feels hot after charging. Is it ok to use it?

Sometimes the batteries in electronic devices can feel hot and that is normal.

My battery is a BL-5C, but not subject to product advisory. How do I know for sure that it is safe?

This product advisory is limited to BL-5C batteries from a single manufacturer during a limited time period. Production of these batteries ended in November 2006.

Nokia?s batteries are tested against known, internationally recognized quality standards and Nokia?s own stringent quality requirements. Nokia also invests a substantial amount in research and development to constantly safeguard and improve the quality and safety of its products. Each of Nokia's batteries complies with all known international quality standards.

What do I do in the meantime if I do not feel comfortable to use my phone? Can Nokia loan me a phone till the replacement battery arrives?
After you have checked your battery identification number, you can determine if your battery is subject to product advisory. If it is not, you don?t have to take any actions and can continue using your phone.

Unfortunately we cannot provide loan phones; this product advisory is limited to a certain lot of BL-5C batteries. We understand your concern, but based on our current understanding, let us assure that the possibility of an incident with your battery is very rare.

Will I be compensated for costs involved in getting the replacement?

This product advisory is free of charge to the consumers, so the replacement battery and the return of the old battery will be paid for.

Is it safe to charge my phone? Is it safe to continue to use my phone?

Nokia and Matsushita believe that the possibility of an incident with your battery is very rare and limited to a specific lot of batteries.

How can you be sure that something like this does not happen to any other batteries that Nokia uses in its products?

All original Nokia batteries adhere to very strict requirements regarding the materials and insulation used. This includes continuous production control and ongoing, intensive product testing. Moreover, Nokia batteries contain built-in safety features, including thermal fuse safety devices, safe cell construction (to prevent internal short cuts), and cell safety vents, among other measures. Due to their construction and the materials used, Nokia lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries have a separate built-in safety circuit.

Windows Live Messenger f?¶r S60

Finally there seems to be a version of Windows Live Messenger for Symbian devices, that is not limited for use in the Chinese market. You can download the client from e.g. http://www.endera.eu/sis/? .

I have successfully tested this application on both Nokia E60 and E61i without any problems. Make sure to install the right file first as mentioned in the "Readme" file.

Note: This application only works on S60 3rd Edition devices such as N91, N93, N95, E50, E60, E61, E61i, E65, 5500 Sport, 3250 etc. If you have an older model of S60 such as 6630, N70, N90 this application is not compatible with your phone.

Enjoy :-)

Mail for Exchange for N73 and N95

Later today (friday) Mail for Exchange will be made available for N73 and N95 via the Download! in the phone, and also on the Business Software webpages.

More N-serie devices will later support Mail for Exchange, but the next round of supported devices is planned for this autumn.

To be continued…..

As I promised on my previous posting, I am going to discuss several VoIP applications. Here, I would like to discuss EQO and fring. I was planning to discuss barablu in this posting. Unfortunately, for some reasons, I couldn??™t make any call yet. I have contacted their customer service asking for advice.

EQO

EQO Mobile

Web site: http://www.eqo.com

Technology: VoIP over cellular

IM support: AIM, MSN, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber.

What I like:

  • We don??™t need WiFi hotspot to make a call. It uses VoIP over cellular technology; so as long as we have cellular connection, we can make a call. This solution does not suitable for us who are in a roaming area though.
  • It supports all popular Instant Messaging services.

What I don??™t like:

  • It is a Java application. This may be just my personal opinion, but I feel that Java applications are slow and require a lot of memory.
  • The user interface is a little bit odd. For example, most S60 applications use left soft key for OK and right soft key for Cancel; EQO uses the other way around.
  • Searching a contact is difficult. We can only search based on the first character of the person??™s name.
  • The service is not so reliable. The service number sometimes cannot route my call to the destination although the phone number is correct.

fring

fring

Web site: http://www.fring.com

Technology: Proprietary, SIP

IM support: Skype, Google Talk, MSN, Twitter

What I like:

  • It is my favorite VoIP application for S60 platform so far.
  • It supports Skype and SIP. It is still very rare that VoIP applications support both of them.

What I don??™t like:

  • The user interface is a little bit complicated. For example, there are several icons at the top with Skype, Google Talk and MSN logos. My first impression was that we should be able to switch between those icons. In fact, it is not possible. Another example, it is difficult to find the phone number from the contacts list. We can only see the phone number if we select Call menu.
  • No support of Yahoo! Messenger.
  • The caller??™s number does not appear in the callee??™s phone.

Compatible devices: S60 2nd, 3rd Edition, Nokia Nseries, Nokia Eseries.

Google and Your S60 Phones - Part III

In this third part, I would like to discuss about YouTube for mobile. It’s been a week since Google announced YouTube for mobile (http://m.youtube.com). It is a good move although there are still some limitations in this beta version. For example, not all videos available in the mobile version yet.

YouTube Mobile

I didn’t write anything about YouTube mobile earlier simply because I had not been able to view any videos from my S60 phones. I keep getting timeout message each time I want to view YouTube video.

YouTube Error: Unable to connect to server. Server time-out

I’ll come back to this error message later. For those who don’t know how to access YouTube for mobile, firstly you have to go to your Web browser and then type in http://m.youtube.com. When you view a video, it is going to be played in Real Player.

Make sure that your Access Point setting on your Real Player is correct. To check it, launch Real Player and then select Options | Settings | Connection | Network | Default Access Point.

Real Player settings

Back to my problem above with timeout message. This symptom can be reproduced if you are using WiFi only. Apparently, my firewall does not allow Real Player traffic, which is delivered in RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol). The problem is that some firewalls do not allow RTSP traffic.

How to solve the problem?

  • Configuring your server to allow Real Player traffic to your device. There is a comprehensive documentation at Real’s web site about firewall. Honestly, I haven’t managed to solve my problem using this approach. Well, I am not a networking expert… :(
  • Another way (that works for me) is by connecting your S60 device directly to the Internet. This can be done by assigning the IP address of your S60 device into DMZ (Demilitarized Zone).

Nokia E90 - first words??¦

image243

Nokia E90 is the new Nokia Communicator. Earlier Communicators have had two operating systems. Serie-40 operating system on the outside, and Serie-80 in the computer part. Serie-80 have a lot of advantages compare to Serie-60, which E90 is based on, for business users.

Swedish communicator? fans have to wait until the end of August until E90 is starting to be sold via Dialect, that has the exclusivity rights on E90 the first month. E90 can then from the end of September be purchased from other retailers in Sweden.

Here in Finland E90 has already started to be sold, and I have myself played around with it for a while. My first impression as a fanatic Serie-60 user, WOW! (the phone is slighly to heavy though).

Then I started to think of all "old" Communicator users that probably will upgrade their old 9300/9500 against this one….Oh, many of them are going to be so dissappointed. I have a list of some things that old communicator users really are going to miss on the new E90, but I will not reveal them right know since I'm afraid of getting into any kind of legal issues with Nokia..like Stefan from RingNokia have been.

One thing to report though….

When you are creating an e-mail account on E90 and select any of the letters ??, ?¤, ?¶ (as we use in Scandinavia) in the name of the e-mail account, the e-mail account will not be created when you have gone through the last step.

In Finland the name for e-mail is "s?¤hk?¶posti", and when trying to write that as a name of the e-mail account, the account? just doesn't appear after the final step.

Nokia PC Suite Enterprise Edition

Nokia PC Suite Enterprise Edition is targeted specifically for business use. The IT administrators will download the software, customize it to fit to the corporate needs and deliver within the organization.

What makes me wonder is a statement in the user guide? about e-mail syncronisation with this application.

*****

2.2. Synchronisation features of Nokia PC Suite Enterprise Edition

Nokia PC Suite Enterprise Edition contains the PC Sync application, which can be used to syncronise calendar entries, tasks, notes, contacts and e-mails between a phone and a PIM. By default, all supported items can be syncronised.

*****

Could this really be correct? I know since before that only 9300, 9300i and 9500 have had the oppurtunity to syncronise e-mails with PC Suite. The statement above sounds at least for me like this feature should apply to all Enterprise Devices, such as the E-series phones.

I don't have time to test this right know, but I'm sure going to test? it with my E60 when I find some extra time.

Google and Your S60 Phones - Part II

After discussing about Google Web Search on your S60 phones, we are now discussing Google SMS. Google SMS is a feature that allows you to do search on Google by sending text message. Unfortunately, I don’t have a list of supported countries. What I know is that it works in the US and Canada.

Searching via Google SMS can be done by sending the query to the number “46645” (GOOGL). The result will be sent back by Google via SMS.

There are several things we can with Google SMS. You can request for exchange rate. For example, send “1 USD in EUR” to find the exchange rate between US dollar and Euro.

Google SMS Exchange Rate Google SMS Exchange Rate

To find the movie schedule, type the movie title followed by the postal code. For example, send “Shrek the Third V6Y 1Z2” to find the schedule of Shrek the Third movie in the area near to V6Y 1Z2.

Google SMS Movie Schedule Google SMS Movie Schedule

You can enquiry weather forecast by typing the “weather” followed by the name of city. For example, send “weather Vancouver BC” to find weather forecast in Vancouver, BC.

Google SMS Weather Forecast Google SMS Weather Forecast

If you have limited access to Google Maps, you can enquiry direction using Google SMS too. For example, send “origin to destination” to Google SMS service. The screenshots below show how the result looks like.

There are other things you can do with Google SMS. Just visit http://www.google.com/sms to find more information about it.
