Featured Freeware - wwigo

wwigo (pronounced “vigo”) stands for Webcam Wherever I Go. It converts our S60 devices into a webcam. The nice thing about wwigo is that you can use it on instant messaging software, including Skype, Yahoo Messenger and Microsoft Live Messenger. Best of all, this application is FREE.

How does it work? There are two applications of wwigo. The first one runs on the PC; the second one runs on the device. They communicate each other via Bluetooth.

The picture below shows the screenshot of wwigo on the device. Sorry, I use my mobile phone, instead of use my own face, in the screenshot because I don’t want to scare you…. :))

The picture below shows how we can use wwigo on Yahoo Messenger. To use it on Yahoo Messenger, you have to go to the Preferences menu and select WWIGO as your default webcam. There is a useful help file of how to setup it once you have installed wwigo on your PC.

Google and Your S60 Phones - Part I

This is my first posting after my “long” vacation. Sorry for lack of postings because I am still catching up with my emails and feeds.

In the next couple of days, I am going to write several blog postings about various Google services for our S60 phones (multimedia computers). Why Google, and not other services? Simple answer: everybody loves Google. Be honest, how many of you can live without Google?

There are several Google applications and services available for S60 devices. Actually all of them are available on other mobile phones as well.

In this first posting, I am going to discuss about Google Web Search. To use the mobile version of Google Web Search, open web browser and type

http://www.google.com/m

Notice “m” at the end of the URL. You can still use the classic Google Web Search, but the mobile version is lighter and faster to load.

google_websearch

From this page, you can do search as you would normally do on the PC. Here are some other interesting things you can do with Google Web Search.

Weather. For example, enter “weather vancouver bc” to find weather information in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

google_weather2

Stock. For example, enter “goog” to find the latest stock price of Google.

google_stock2

Places. For example, enter “Mcdonald vancouver bc” to find McDonald’s restaurant around Vancouver, BC, Canada.

google_place2

Movies. You can enter the movie title to find the show times of the cinemas around your area. For example, you can simply “Shrek the Third” to get the result like the screenshot below.

google_movie2

There is a drawback of using mobile version of Google Web Search, i.e. not all features are supported. For example, we cannot inquiry exchange rate by entering “1 USD in CAD”.

Watch out for Netcompressor!

A new sort of harmful code aimed for Symbian devices has been discovered. If you install it, your phone will start to send Premium SMS's.

The harmful code is a kind of Trojan, which means that it will appear to be a normal application with a certain function, but in fact it has instead a totally unwanted feature. Instead of being a real application your phone will start to send Premium SMS's to Russian receivers. The Trojan has been spreading under the name Netcompressor on some file sharing pages for mobile phones.

Viver will attack mobile phones with Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition. This means that Nokias new smartphones can not be infected by this application. If you have a Nokia 6630, 6680, N70, N70 etc. you might have to? watch out!

Nokias global market share for mobile phones increased up to 36 % (from 35%) during the last year. At the same time Nokia lost 7% in global profits which can be associated with "one-off costs and falling prices for its mobile phones." Nokia sold mobile phones for 979 million Euros, down from 1.0 billion Euros worth of sales in the previous year.

In all, Nokia is in a good position. The profit slide is reasonable and the Finnish handset giant is slowly creeping upwards in their market share - even as Symbian OS is losing ground to Linux and Windows Mobile and the global slowdown of mobile phone sales.

Hiding Unwanted Gallery Images

Did you know that you can hide photos from showing up in the Gallery in the phone?

Why would you like to do this? Well, here are some exemples:

1. You have taken some pictures with your camera that you don't want to show up in the Gallery in the phone, so however looks in the phone can't see them.

2.? You have photos attached to your contacts that you don't want to take unnessesary space in the Gallery.

Removing installed Themes

Sometimes after you have installed a theme in your phone (S60 3rd Edition), they might not show up in the Application Manager. This is a known bug in S60 3rd Edition, and? as you know you can't uninstall something that isn't found in the Application Manager….at least not officially if you contact Nokia.

Luckily there are a lot of? people out there, that? comes up with great solutions for situations like this. The guide how-to-remove the theme can be found on the blog Symbian in Motion, which is another great blog I have recently discovered.

Animated SMS??™s in S60 3rd Edition

Do you often? receive an SMS but don't know what the smiley means?

Maybe the person that sends the SMS have a different phone that has the smiley animations in the Messaging application of that phone.

If you register on www.mmcforums.net for free there is an application available there, that calles 'Nokia SMS Wizard from my N95 1GB-MMC (Hongkong Pack)' that you can download and install? to your phone.

I don't? yet own a Nokia N95 but? I downloaded the application and installed it in my Nokia E60. After the installation when? you go to Messaging and? select New Message you will have a fourth option there suddenly called Animated Message.

When I select Animated Message I got an error message saying : This software can only be used in Nokia phones sold in Honk Kong. Your phone cannot use this software.

After ignoring the message by simply clicking OK (not so many other options as you might see) I tried to send a message to myself. The message came through and the smiley icon is there and movin'. Yep these icons are animated icons that move even if you can't see it here.

Maybe a little annoying to get that error message every time you are sending a message with smileys, but if you can live with that, I think this little add-on seems pretty cool. Just annoying that all cool applications like this one and e.g. the real MSN client from MSN China? is somehow restricted to the Asian market.

I cannot promise anything but I guess this application would run on most of the S60 3rd Edition phones.

Anything About Synchronization

This may be my last posting before I go for vacation. Sorry for no posting at all in the last few days. I have been very busy finishing all my tasks before “disappear” for two weeks

Today’s topic is “synchronization“. It is about synchronization of everything, including contacts, images, music, videos and documents. How do we synchronize them between our PC (main computer) and S60 devices (mobile devices)? Note that the discussion below focuses on PC (Windows) only. For Mac users, please start looking at iSync.

Contacts Synchronization

  • PC Suite. I am pretty sure most of you are using PC Suite. It allows us to synchronize contacts between our devices and PC, mainly Microsoft Outlook. It doesn’t support Thunderbird yet.
  • Nokia Synchronization for Thunderbird. It is supposed to allow us synchronizing contacts from Thunderbird to Nokia phones. Unfortunately, I couldn’t manage to make it work.

Images/Videos Synchronization

Please check my previous postings:

Music Synchronization

Files/Folders Synchronization

Imagine that you have a bunch of files on the PC that you want to “carry” on your S60 devices, for example Word or Excel documents. Later, you may update the files, either on the PC or S60 devices, how do we synchronize them?

  • Allway Sync ‘n’ Go. It is my favorite application to synchronize files and/or folders. Best of all, it is free.
Basically, you have to connect your S60 device to a PC in “Mass Storage” mode. It means that you can only use it on newer S60 devices because older devices don’t have this mode.

Compatible devices: S60 2nd, 3rd, Nokia Nseries, Nokia Eseries.
